Brisbane River Cruises

The Brisbane River flows through Queensland, Australia and empties into Moreton Bay. If you are going to pass by that area, you may want to consider Brisbane River cruises. One company that offers such cruises is the rightly named Brisbane Cruises. For many years now this cruise line has been offering quality cruises down this river. They employ a variety of ships including the majestic Lady Brisbane. Built in 1972 for the purpose of traveling to the Great Barrier Reef, this ship has a traditional look with many modern conveniences. On this ship you will find plenty of room for relaxing, dining and dancing and ample cover in the event of rain.

One of the most entertaining cruises offered by this company are those to St. Helena. This location is only 6 km southeast of the mouth of the Brisbane River. From 1867 to 1932, St. Helena was a prison that housed Queensland's various criminals. Together this one of a kind prison was built by the prisoners themselves who worked together using local materials. For example, the cement was crafted from the lime kiln. Here, the prisoners grew their own crops and even exported their goods overseas and to the mainland. This unique prison thus became a self supporting prison unlike today's taxpayer based prison systems.

St. Helena is now of course a prime tourist attraction. On your cruise to this historic location you will take a guided tour through various ruins. You will get to see the blacksmith shop, sugar mill, olive grove and more. Other stops may include the prisoner and guard cemetery and area known as the punishment yard. There is also an informative and entertaining museum here. There are full day trips available to St. Helena and even those that are especially designed for students on field trips. Another popular trip is the Live Comedy-Drama Entertainment tour which is fun for kids and adults.

Brisbane river cruises are also a perfect way to enjoy the unspoiled scenery of the region. Animals you may see on your trip include koalas, flying foxes, various species of birds, and sometimes even dolphins. Other attractions you may see on such a cruise are landmarks like the Kangaroo Point Cliffs. These cliffs are found across from Gardens Point at the southern portion of the Brisbane River. No matter where you go on the river, you are likely to have a wonderful time!
